Watch out for cyberthreats: Winter Olympics scams and beyond

Cybercriminals Target Olympics: Major Risks and Safety Tips

Cybercriminals are ramping up their efforts ahead of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, employing various tactics to exploit fans and participants. Key threats include phishing scams, fake ticketing sites, and AI-powered fraud techniques.

With a history of targeting major sporting events, cybercriminals have leveraged the Olympics for years. The Beijing 2008 games saw the emergence of fake ticketing schemes, while the Pyeongchang 2018 games were notably disrupted by state-aligned actors using wiper malware. As the upcoming event approaches, risks such as phishing attempts via email and social media, counterfeit ticket-selling websites, and fraudulent mobile apps are expected to increase. Scammers may also use unethical marketing practices like SEO poisoning to drive traffic to malicious sites.

Another sophisticated tactic includes QR code phishing, especially effective at in-person events, capturing sensitive information directly from victims. Scammers are also creating highly believable deepfake content to trick fans into donating to fake charities, alongside promoting non-existent job opportunities within the Olympic framework.

Why this matters: The potential damage from these threats extends beyond individual loss; a successful scam can undermine trust in event organizations and lead to significant financial and reputational risks. Organizations should educate fans on cybersecurity best practices to mitigate these dangers effectively.

Implementing strong security measures is crucial. Reliable threat intelligence, robust firewalls, and comprehensive monitoring systems can help organizations defend against these scams. Regular vulnerability scanning and employee training will further bolster defenses, leading to a safer experience for all.

As for Indicators of Compromise (IOCs), the article does not provide specific technical data or related IOCs.
