Urgent cybersecurity notice: Update Cisco IMC and SSM On-Prem without delay!

Critical Vulnerabilities in Cisco Management Technologies Expose Systems to Remote Exploitation

Two high-severity vulnerabilities identified in Cisco Integrated Management Controller and Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem could lead to a complete takeover of affected systems. The flaws, designated CVE-2026-20093 and CVE-2026-20160, both bear a CVSS score of 9.8, highlighting their critical nature.

The first vulnerability, CVE-2026-20093, relates to an authentication bypass in the Cisco Integrated Management Controller (IMC). An attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a crafted HTTP request, allowing them to bypass login controls and gain unauthorized access. The IMC is integral for managing server hardware and configurations, making this vulnerability particularly risky. The second vulnerability, CVE-2026-20160, is a command injection issue in the Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem. This flaw permits remote attackers to execute OS commands with root privileges by exploiting exposed services, potentially compromising system integrity and administrative controls.

In the context of attack methodologies, these vulnerabilities align with several techniques outlined in the MITRE ATT&CK framework. Attackers could initiate access through exploiting the exposed IMC interface, subsequently bypassing authentication measures and escalating privileges through command injection. They could potentially alter critical configurations and gain administrative persistence.

Defensive Context

Organizations leveraging Cisco UCS servers or related management technologies are at heightened risk due to the vulnerabilities discussed. Specifically, entities that utilize Cisco IMC or Smart Software Manager On-Prem must assess their exposure and consider immediate actions to mitigate risks. System administrators and security teams that oversee these technologies should prioritize addressing these vulnerabilities to safeguard operational environments.

While the vulnerabilities pertain to specific Cisco management solutions, they represent a significant risk for environments that rely heavily on these systems for server management and licensing tracking. Those not using these technologies may not be directly impacted but should remain vigilant about similar vulnerabilities in their own infrastructure.

Why This Matters
The potential for full administrative access and command execution through these vulnerabilities presents serious implications for data confidentiality and system integrity. Organizations running affected products face increased risks of unauthorized access, which could result in severe operational disruptions and data breaches.

Defender Considerations
Prompt patching of the affected Cisco software components is crucial. Specific patch details are available for the relevant Cisco products, with recommendations for upgrades to the latest fixed releases, addressing both vulnerabilities comprehensively. Organizations should particularly ensure that Cisco IMC and Smart Software Manager installations are up-to-date to defend against possible exploits.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Affected products include:

  • Cisco Integrated Management Controller (IMC)
  • Cisco Smart Software Manager On-Prem

Vulnerabilities:

  • CVE-2026-20093
  • CVE-2026-20160

Immediate patching for listed Cisco software versions should be a priority for mitigating these risks.
