Uncovering CVE-2025-68670: Remote code execution vulnerability lurking in the xrdp server

May 11, 2026 | Threat Intelligence Research

Remote Code Execution Vulnerability Discovered in xrdp Server

Kaspersky researchers have identified a remote code execution vulnerability in the xrdp remote desktop server, designated CVE-2025-68670. This vulnerability was uncovered during a routine security audit and has been patched in several xrdp versions.

The vulnerability exists within the xrdp_wm_parse_domain_information function of the xrdp codebase. Here, improper handling of long domain names can lead to a buffer overflow without requiring valid credentials for exploitation, as it occurs before client authentication. Specifically, an attacker can exploit this by sending a crafted domain string containing excess bytes, which would overflow a stack buffer designated for domain names, hence permitting execution of arbitrary code.

The vulnerability is illustrated through a detailed breakdown of the code, including the stack handling and transformation of domain strings from UTF-16 to UTF-8. The parsing function does not adequately check the input bounds concerning the destination buffer size, leading to a potential overwrite of the return address on the stack.

Defensive Context

Organizations using the xrdp remote desktop server should prioritize attention to this vulnerability, particularly those managing sensitive environments where remote access solutions are deployed. The specific mechanism of exploitation indicates that those who utilize xrdp for remote sessions can be at an immediate risk, especially if proper limitations on domain inputs are not enforced.

Moreover, this vulnerability may have broader implications for any system reliant on remote desktop functionality, as well as any integration with non-validated user inputs. Enterprises operating thin clients or remote solutions similar to those provided by Kaspersky should assess their configurations and guard against overly long domain inputs.

Why This Matters

The real-world risk associated with CVE-2025-68670 is substantial, particularly for organizations that rely on xrdp for remote desktop connectivity. Unauthenticated access to systems could lead to unauthorized execution of arbitrary code, compromising user data and overall system integrity. This vulnerability highlights the importance of validating input lengths for any system handling user credentials or sensitive information.

Defender Considerations

Defenders should focus on patching their xrdp versions immediately, having been patched in versions 0.10.5, 0.9.27, and 0.10.4.1. In addition, monitoring for any unusual connection attempts or input patterns related to remote desktop sessions may help identify potential exploitation attempts. Adequate buffers must be configured, and strict validation on input lengths enforced to prevent such vulnerabilities.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • CVE Identifier: CVE-2025-68670
  • Affected software versions: xrdp 0.10.5, 0.9.27, 0.10.4.1

For effective operational scrutiny, continuous updates regarding the configurations and regular security assessments of all remote access solutions are advisable.
