HoneyMyte enhances CoolClient backdoor with cutting-edge data theft techniques

Feb 1, 2026 | Threat Intelligence Research

Mustang Panda Cyber Espionage: Advanced Tactics and Toolsets

HoneyMyte, also known as Mustang Panda or Bronze President, has increased its cyber espionage activities across Asia and Europe, primarily targeting government agencies. Recent investigations by Kaspersky reveal that this APT group utilizes a sophisticated array of tools, including the CoolClient backdoor and various browser credential stealers, which have evolved significantly.

The CoolClient backdoor, initially identified in 2022, has seen updates to its capabilities, including enhanced system monitoring, keylogging, and packet sniffing features. It often employs DLL sideloading techniques using signed executables from legitimate software for deployment. Recent campaigns have also identified a variant capable of introducing a new rootkit into compromised systems. Another primary tool in HoneyMyte’s arsenal involves browser credential stealers targeting Chrome and Microsoft Edge, which are executed as part of post-exploitation efforts to harvest user login information.

These operations signal a shift in HoneyMyte’s tactics, moving from simple document theft to comprehensive surveillance capabilities. The group now employs scripts for network profiling, document theft, and credential exfiltration, highlighting their adaptability and commitment to maintaining extended access to targets. Notable methods include file uploading via public services like Pixeldrain and using FTP for exfiltration.

HoneyMyte’s activities pose a serious risk to organizations, particularly in sensitive sectors. The deployment of their extensive toolset can lead to severe data breaches that compromise personal and governmental information. Additionally, as threats like this continue to evolve, the potential for these tactics to be utilized against various targets grows significantly.

Implementing robust threat intelligence gathering, continuous monitoring via SIEM, and vulnerability scanning can help organizations mitigate risks associated with HoneyMyte’s activities. Regular updates and vigilance in network security are crucial in defending against such advanced persistent threats.
