Exploring the evolving landscape of ransomware threats in 2026

May 18, 2026 | Threat Intelligence Research

Evolving Threat Landscape of Ransomware in 2026

Ransomware remains a critical cybersecurity challenge, according to Kaspersky’s latest report. While the number of organizations affected by ransomware incidents decreased in 2025, the strategic evolution of ransomware tactics and the emergence of new cryptographic technologies signify an ongoing and sophisticated threat.

The report highlights a notable shift towards advanced ransomware techniques, including the adoption of post-quantum cryptography. New ransomware families, such as PE32, are implementing encryption standards designed to withstand attacks from both classical and quantum computing systems. This progression potentially complicates decryption efforts for victims, exacerbating the operational risks posed by ransomware. Moreover, a transition towards encryptionless extortion has become evident, with attackers focusing on data exfiltration and threatening public disclosure to extract ransom payments, thus transforming the nature of the threat landscape.

Ransomware operators are increasingly employing tools to neutralize endpoint defenses before carrying out attacks. Techniques such as Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) allow adversaries to subtly exploit legitimate system components to disable security protocols without raising immediate alarms. This indicates a strategic shift where evasion tactics are no longer merely opportunistic but integrated into the attack lifecycle, necessitating robust detection mechanisms and active monitoring.

Defensive Context

Organizations, especially those with significant digital infrastructures such as RDP and VPN access, need to recognize that ransomware threats are not static. The rise of data-centric extortion models signifies a shift from purely operational disruption to a broader risk encompassing data security, compliance, and reputational integrity. Industries with valuable sensitive data, such as manufacturing and finance, are particularly vulnerable due to their operational interdependencies and the potential financial repercussions of a data breach.

Why This Matters

The ongoing evolution of ransomware tactics indicates that all sectors must remain vigilant. Although overall ransomware incidents diminished, the persistent sophistication and adaptability of attackers mean that any organization with network access is at risk. Those adopting new technologies or working in sectors reliant on legacy systems may be especially susceptible to these advanced threats.

Defender Considerations

Organizations should enhance their defenses by focusing on endpoint visibility and operational integrity. Breaking from conventional ransomware responses, they must invest in detection solutions aimed at identifying attempts to tamper with security measures, such as BYOVD techniques. Given the emergence of encryptionless extortion tactics, organizations need to develop comprehensive data protection strategies that include advanced monitoring of systems for unusual access patterns and stringent access controls.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

No specific IOCs were provided in the report; however, the focus on new ransomware families adopting post-quantum encryption creates an imperative for organizations to remain aware of these evolving threats and assess their current posture against potential vulnerabilities.
